Fine Arts Department leads mural painting project

TED Fine Arts and SHS-Arts and Design students participated in the Art with a HeART mural painting project at the San Miguel Integrated School last January 15-17, 2020.

As part of the TED Community Extension Program, the activity was made possible through the collaboration of faculty and students from PWC and the partner school located at Lubogan, Toril, Davao City. The PWC participants led in marking the design outline, which was visually striking yet simple enough for non-artist participants to finish; both high school and elementary students from the partner school got to take part in the painting process.

“The project was a success as it sparked the children’s interest in art as well as cooperation in the betterment of their community,” 3rd year BFA Visual Communication student Nichole Jan Gabuya shared on her experience, “it started with just 20 students participating. Eventually, more students joined during their recess and chose to participate instead of playing. At the end of the day, it was inspiring to see how they joined in to contribute to the community while sharing their passion for art.”

The design conceptualized by multi-awarded artist and Fine Arts faculty member Jun Pamisa highlighted the four main icons representative of Davao: the Philippine eagle, waling-waling, durian, and the majestic Mt. Apo as the centerpiece. The backdrop consisted of flowing lines that came alive in vivid primary and secondary colors. The choice of design was in alignment with PWC’s vision of keeping heritage alive while elevating the academe’s role in preserving cultural identity.

The same department notably did a similar project for Buhangin Central Elementary School last November 2018.
