BFA students excel in national art and design competition

PWC once again takes pride in offering quality education for Fine Arts in Davao as five students of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program competed at the Metrobank Art and Design (MADE) Competition 2018. MADE is an annual visual arts competition by the Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) that has been a platform for emerging artists for more than 3 decades now.

This year’s MADE was launched on January 25, 2018 in Taguig City, accepting entries for painting (watermedia on paper and acrylic/oil on canvas) and sculpture competitions until May 11. After a long process of screening, awarding ceremony and exhibit opening took place last September 20, 2018. With the theme “Discover”, the competition urged artists to discover beauty in things mundane and overlooked.

Third year Bachelor of Fine Arts students, Eloisa Sanson, Arvin Cantalejo, and Laurence Tulio and alumni Dave Ibao and Clyde Laudato participated in the national competition, all in the acrylic/oil on canvas category. Although fine arts in Davao has rich potential to be explored and cultivated, these young artists find that competitions are most often on the national level. 

Sanson, who was named a national finalist in MADE 2018 for her piece entitled “Little Talks”, has also been an awardee at Shell’s National School Competition for two consecutive years now(2016, 2017). For her, joining competitions brings about fulfillment of her passion for painting as publicizing the pieces she made enables her to share ideas, experience, and emotion to individuals.

For Cantalejo, who was also previously awarded in PLDT’s National Visual Arts Competition 2016, his purpose is to show people what “real art” is, basically the use of imagination and proper execution in relaying life experiences.

Both young artists are looking forward to a successful career in the arts in the future as they display willingness to take on anything, or in Sanson’s words, to “go with the flow”, rather than limit themselves by setting rigid goals to pursue.
