Fine Arts and Interior Design program hold 12th Awards Night
“Be where you are at the moment—live in the present, and let the wind take you to your destiny.”
Such were the words that Interior Designer Anna Rosal Verga left resonating in the room, and most likely every listener’s heart and mind, during the 12th Annual Arts and Design Awards Night held last April 1, 2019 at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.
A culminating tradition of the PWC Helena Z. Bentitez School of Fine Arts and Design, the event is a celebration of the Fine Arts and Interior Design Program’s achievements, an avenue to recognize students’ outstanding skills, performance, and even service, and finally a sendoff activity for the graduating batch.
This year, the students and faculty wore their ever-brightly burning passion and dedication to the arts with the theme Old Hollywood Glamour. Present in the event were Chancellor and Academic Vice-president Dr. Ida Yap Patron, VP for Finance Dr. Aida Fedee, and Brenda Z. Barba, director of the Fine Arts and Interior Design Program. They were joined by esteemed alumni fashion designers Jun Artajo and Che Aranuez, and interior designer Anna Rosal Verga.

Short film outputs by the Visual Communication students were also showcased, exploring different themes and techniques in depiction of their course learnings and skill developent.
3rd year Fahion Design student Dennis Dilig then gave the Graduating Student Speech in behalf of her batchmates, wittyingly reminscing their experiences thoughout their college journey.
Awarding
A number of awards were then conferred to the students in each major, recognizing those whose skills and performances stood out in embodiment of the Fine Arts program’s vision for its students. Finally, the major awardees were named: Painting student Darrela Kate Labio bagged the BRENDA Award and Angelie Ainie Condesa took home the ADA Award.
The awarding took a sweet twist as a surprise award was handed to Emi Alexander Englis, Fashion Design program chair: the Helena Award, an esteemed service award to be given every 5 years.
‘Living in the present’
In her inspiring talk, Ms. Verga shared the various perceptions her students had of her, leading to the emphasis on valuing self-idenity in the process of being an artist. Too often, she said, authenticity is compromised in the quest for perfection. In the end, she stressed that the goal is to be free—for everyone to embrace their individuality and just live in the present. This implies taking in all the learning that comes with time, and that will equip one for the future.
Indeed, the essence of the arts lies in profound awareness of oneself and keen observation and oftentimes appreciation of moments and details. That night was a pause in recognition of the milestones that led to that moment, of the ‘presents’ that came to pass.
In the presence of alumni who have established their names in the industry, ever-supportive faculty whose mentorship goes beyond the classroom, and students exhibiting immense potential and some already realized in awards, prospects for the Fine Arts and Interior Design Program is looking good as ever. It continues to hone students to be artists rooted to their identity and adaptable to the advancements of the industry, and will continue to do so towards the empowerment of the local arts scene.
