Heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Brenda Barba, 2023 Datu Bago Awardee for Visual Arts. The Datu Bago Award is the highest award bestowed by the City Government of Davao through the City Mayor’s Office to well-deserving Dabawenyos who have made outstanding contributions to the development and growth of Davao City.
Ms. Barba is the Cluster Director of PWC Fine Arts and Interior Design. The Datu Bago award is a well-deserved recognition for a sterling career over a span of five decades as an artist, educator, and purveyor of art and design education in Davao.
The Philippine Women’s College of Davao proudly nominated her for her lifelong dedication and pioneering efforts in transitioning classical visual arts training toward multidisciplinary art and design education in Davao City as a prolific visual and performing artist. She was one of the earliest women artists in the city and was recognized as a progressive educator.
In her nomination, PWC Chancellor and COO Prof. Vicente Pijano noted that Mrs. Barba is an icon worth emulating with a passion that significantly inspired and contributed to Davao’s vibrant and diverse cultural landscape. She established the PWC Fine Arts and Design Program through the inspiration of the late National Artist Victorio Edades. She led the crafting of the first baccalaureate fashion, multimedia arts, and interior design programs in Mindanao.
The Philippine Women’s College of Davao is proud and honored to call her one of our own.
