EMI ENGLIS is one of this year’s Garbo sa Dabaw (Pride of Davao) Awardees for the Arts, a prestigious honor presented during the Pasidungog event, which celebrates Davao’s founding anniversary at the SMX Convention Center.
Emi serves as a Private Sector Representative for Object Making on the Design Advisory Council (DAC) of the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), the national think tank responsible for the country’s first-ever National Design Policy. He is also a board member and co-chair for the education and policy sectors of the Philippine Fashion Coalition. As the Creative Director of Emi-Alexander Englis, a bespoke apparel brand specializing in bridal and debutante fashion, he brings over 25 years of experience as a creative entrepreneur. Emi’s impact extends beyond the apparel industry into creative education, research and development, and civic service. His work is rooted in principles like hyperlocalization, multidisciplinarity, innovative entrepreneurship, and Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) fashion and lifestyle.
A passionate advocate for Design for Social Impact, Emi is an alumnus of the British Council’s Creative Innovators Program Fellowship. He is currently the Director at the Philippine Women’s College of Davao Center for Innovation and Social Ventures and chairs the Helena Z. Benitez School of Fine Arts Program. Additionally, Emi serves as the President of the Davao Fashion and Design Council Foundation, Inc. (DFDCFI), the only fashion business support organization in the Philippines backed by a city ordinance and a sustainability grant.
In the past year, Emi has contributed as a juror for the Mohammed Islam Design Award (MIDA) for Fair Trade in South Africa and the Good Design Award Philippines, focusing on Object-Making and Material Innovation. He also served as a local advisor for the ‘Mindanao and Sulu Seas’ project at the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT11) in Queensland, Australia.
